Ampicillin is an antibiotic act by interfering directly with the turnover of the bacteria cell wall and indirectly by triggering the release of enzymes that further alter the cell wall. Ampicillin is used as a selective antibiotic for resistant bacteria, generally at a concentration of 10-25 µg/ml for liquid media and 35-50 µg/ml for plates.
Ampicillin is not used to prevent bacterial contamination of cell cultures due to concerns of mammalian and insect cell toxicity. We offer a variety of cell culture antibiotics for your convenience.
